Sauna & Cold Plunge Guide

Can you just plug in a sauna? Only 1 of the 5 we checked works with a regular outlet.

Updated November 1, 2026 · Checked on each company's website and manual · How we check

We checked 5 infrared saunas sold as "120-volt" or "plug-in." Only the Peak Shasta has a regular plug. The other 4 need a 20-amp outlet, the kind with one sideways slot.

If your outlet has two straight slots, those 4 won't plug in. A licensed electrician must confirm what your home needs.

How to tell your outlets apart

Look at the slots.

Regular outlet (15 amp)Two straight slots. Works with the Peak Shasta.
20-amp outletOne slot has a sideways part. The other 4 saunas need this one.

Before you order

  1. Find the outlet closest to where the sauna will go. Check whether it's regular or 20-amp, and measure the distance. The cords on these are 8 to 10 feet long.
  2. Look at the "Own breaker?" column. 3 of the 5 companies say nothing else can be on that breaker.
  3. Show this page to a licensed electrician before you buy.
